The success of Split Fiction has caught the attention of Hollywood, with the critically acclaimed co-op game now in the early stages of a potential movie adaptation. According to Variety, a bidding war has erupted among various Hollywood studios, eager to secure the film rights to the popular title.
Although multiple offers are being considered, the production is being spearheaded by Story Kitchen, which is reportedly assembling a team, including writers and a director. However, neither Hazelight Studios, the developer of Split Fiction, nor Story Kitchen have officially commented or confirmed the details of the project at this time.
For context, Story Kitchen is also collaborating with Sandfall Interactive on a movie adaptation of the upcoming turn-based RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which is generating significant buzz.
Meanwhile, Split Fiction continues to enjoy success in the gaming world. Earlier this month, Hazelight released an accolades trailer to showcase the game’s critical acclaim. In addition to positive reviews, the game performed exceptionally well commercially, selling over 2 million copies in its first week alone—a milestone the studio proudly celebrated on social media.
Split Fiction is a co-op adventure game that follows two players, Zoe and Mio, who find themselves trapped in a simulation. The duo must work together to solve various fantasy and sci-fi-themed challenges inspired by their shared interests in these genres.
Recently, two speedrunners completed a secret level in the game, a feat that only a few members of the development team had managed to accomplish. In a video message congratulating the pair, director Josef Fares expressed his amazement at their achievement. “Wow, amazing,” Fares said in the video. “You have to understand that there are barely people on our team that can make it. It took us a lot of time to finish it. And I’m telling you, this is a crazy, crazy achievement that you have done.”
Fares went on to promise an exclusive reward for the first speedrunner to prove their accomplishment in person: “If you see me in real life, somewhere, and you can prove to me that you actually did this challenge, I can promise you, the first one to do that, I’m going to fly you to Sweden and show you footage of our next game.”
In related news, Fares also revealed that Hazelight has already begun working on its next project. Speaking on a podcast earlier this month, he shared that the success of Split Fiction has fueled the development team’s ambition to raise the bar even higher for their next title. “We really feel like, ‘Oh, they really like this so much,’” Fares said. “We can do way better. That’s the funny part. It’s not like we’re feeling now ‘how will we top this?’ We just feel, just wait till what we do next, you know.”
